The new oil filter has its own, new gasket. Make sure the old gasket was removed to ensure creating a good seal with the new oil filter. 8. Lubricate the Gasket. Wipe the filter mount and lubricate. Lubricate the seal on a spin-on filter, or the O-ring on a cartridge filter. 9.

Then place the oil drain tray under the sump, remove the oil filler cap, and loosen the sump plug with a sump plug key until the oil starts to flow into the drain tray. At this point, you can use the oil filter wrench to unscrew the oil filter, counter-clockwise, which will allow the oil to flow out fully and quickly.

Step 4: Remove oil drain plug. Under the car, locate the oil drain plug. Set a drain pan beneath the plug. Use a drain pan designed to hold twice the capacity of oil in the engine's crankcase. Once your drain pan is in place, remove the plug and set it someplace safe. It's a good idea to replace your drain plug gasket.

Over time, heat breaks down the oil and reduces its lubricating properties. Oil also helps to neutralize acid in the engine, but this process breaks down over time. Oil works well to absorb trace amounts of water, dust and combustion byproducts in your engine. However, as heat breaks down the oil, it loses its effectiveness to absorb these ...

Oil Changing Frequency. Towing heavy loads can shorten the life of your engine's oil. So how often should you replace your engine's oil? Most experts and manufacturers agree that every three months, or 3,000 to 5,000 miles (4,828 to 8,047 kilometers), is the most acceptable. During an oil change, the old oil is taken from a vehicle's engine. It's replaced with new, fresh oil. The engine oil filter is usually also changed at the same time. Automobile engines have many moving parts. As these parts move and rub against each other, the force of friction creates heat.

Remove the hex nut that is inside the drain spout on the engine. Get the drain hose over the top of the engine drain spout. Make sure the other end is over the drain pan. Begin to slowly lower your engine into the vertical position. Gravity will do the rest and allow the oil to drain out.

Unscrew the oil filler cap, which is near the engine and the dipstick (an oil can is drawn on top of the plug). Gradually pour in the new oil. Screw the cap back on the oil tank and reinsert the dipstick.
